Making a list and checking it twice

Here are some secrets for success at dress rehearsals.
  • Find a laundry basket and label it clearly with your name.   This basket will be your closet for the duration of the play.   It is your personal space.   It will be carried back and forth to your house.
  • label everything ---most of these costumes will be one of 20-30 of the same.   Make sure yours has a name on it.
  • Bring only what you need---don't overload yourself with unnecessary items.   You don't need hair and makeup stuff yet....don't bring them
  • Check the list and be prepared.    Below is a copy of the list all the cast members were given last week.   Double check to be sure you have everything.
  • Be sure to check everything in your basket is yours before you leave.   --Often things can get mistakenly placed in the wrong basket.
  • PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE.    Dress rehearsals can be tough and long.   Keep a smile---we will all get through this.

another great week

It has been another fabulous week of working hard both off and on stage.  And we are one more week closer to opening.
Performers have been working hard and the first 3 numbers are staged and look fabulous.  From the children's chorus of thirty to the large ensemble of 83; each rehearsal is a remarkable step on a great journey to opening night.
Offstage and behind the scenes I feel like we have only stopped costuming to sleep for a few hours.   Costuming 150 cast members with at least 3 costumes a piece takes hundreds of hours of preparation.   Finally we are ready to hand out the first fabric and patterns so mothers, grandmothers, aunts, etc... can get sewing.   I know that people are getting nervous about deadlines, but it has taken a few miracles to get us to this point.   So thanks for your understanding.   We are still waiting for 600 yards of fabric that is coming from LA, so everyone cross your fingers that it comes soon so we can get it out to everyone.   In the scenery department, designs are complete and lumber is ordered and on it's way.   We will definately see sawdust soon.

A message to cast and crew: Thanks for working so hard and for sharing your time and talents with us.  I know this is not necessarily the "fun" part of the show, but we have to keep working hard.   It will all pay off in the end.

GREAT FIRST WEEK

Well it has been an exciting and busy week.   We had our first rehearsals and our first public performance all in one week.   Tuesday's cast meeting was wonderful, so much energy and anticipation.   And Thursday the rehearsal went well, everyone was working so hard. Friday's rehearsal was a 'realization' of how much we have to do in such a short time.   Luckily we have a great cast and a phenomenal music director--Mrs. Bigler!
And every day after school our children's chorus "the dreamers" worked and worked on their performance for the benefit.
Friday night we participated in the benefit concert.  Productions Company opened the concert with a fun showstopper and Concert Choir and Madrigals joined together with the children to close the concert with a preview of our show.   It was so fun to watch everyone performing.  You could feel the energy and see how much fun everyone was having.   It was a wonderful performance and left me with so much excitement for our real "OPENING NIGHT."
Thanks so much to Braden Howard for organizing this benefit.   It was so successful.   We are lucky to have someone who cares so much about our Auditorium.   Thanks too to the wonderful performers who shared their talents and to the audience for the generous donations.
Saturday we had a blast at the parade.   Thanks to many hands, we definately had the cutest BEHS float.  Thanks to everyone who helped and a special thanks to Bryce Day, Kelly and LaNan Donovan, Braden Howard, Kailey Ipsen (and her dad), Marissa and Brandon Nelson, Scott Nelson, tech theater and John and Jeremy for truly going the extra.
Extra news.   This week Michelle Dean, one of our own narrators, competed and won 2 attendant to the Peach Queen.    Congrats Michelle.

Congratulations.   It was a fabulous past few days.   We have loved seeing all the talent we have at Box Elder.   We are so lucky to work at a school with so many AMAZING students.  Now the real tough part begins.   As you can see from the length of the list, we still have a lot of work to do.  Thursday is going to be a long afternoon.  So here are some pointers
  •  Please be sure to have the song printed out (they are on the audition page).  Women need to prepare Narrator and Wives.  Men need to prepare Brothers and Pharoah
  •  You will be dancing so come dressed to do so---no dance clothes please.  Just come dressed for  movement
  • Come prepared with the songs.   You may sing some or all of them.
  • Bring a water bottle-no snacks, pop or food.
  • No cell phones allowed to the audition.
  • No friends/parents.  This is a closed process.
  • Meet in the auditorium at 3:15
  • Relax and have fun.  We want to see you do your very best and nerves seldom allow this.
  • Be flexible, directable  and listen carefully.
This audition will be lengthy and not everyone is being considered for the same parts.  You may be asked to come and go throughout the afternoon.  But you MUST be available til 7 PM.   It may take that long.

Call back songs

Call back music has been posted on the audition page if you want to look over it. (We highly suggest that you do.)

HELP FOR PARADE

We are looking for a flat bed trailer (like for hay) that we can decorate and use for the Peach Days Parade.   Or maybe even a diesel with a trailer.
We would need to decorate it on Friday the 9 and have it for the Parade the next morning.
Please help us by using all resources to help us have an amazing float for the parade.

SPREAD THE WORD

In order for this to be an AMAZING production, we need AMAZING people.   We really need to get the word out.  Tell your friends---tell your enemies too.   Please help us to get the best people in the school there.   My vision of this show is with a HUGE cast.   Please help me get a huge cast by telling everyone to come to audition.  Bring any friends by my office and I will help you.  :)

Auditions Yes they are tomorrow.

NEW INFORMATION ON THE AUDITIONS PAGE

After a long and hot day at school and after answering a lot of the same questions, I have posted a question and answer section on the audition page.  Please check it.  I hope it helps.  :)

I also posted the audition info for dancers.   --Please spread the word.  We really want some incredible dancers and they don't even have to do a vocal audition.

I also added a link for the audition application so you can download it and fill it out.

Remember to relax.  This is supposed to be fun.    And we are not the enemy.   We REALLY want you to be successful at auditions.

Joseph comes to BEHS again

After our successful run of Phantom last year, I knew we would need to be very selective with our choice for this year.   I wanted something totally different, --bright, sparkely and fun (with no black paint).     Something with fabulous sets and costumes, jam-packed with enormous production numbers.  A show full of the magic that can only be experience through musical theatre.   After months of thought and lengthy consideration Joseph was selected.   The great thing about this show includes every theatrical genre.   With this choice our students will not do a show; they will actually have the opportunity to get a taste of over ten different broadway shows.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is not a new show for Brigham City, this popular production has had many successful runs in Box Elder County.  However, no one in Brigham has seen or even dreamed of the production that will open November 4.   This production will be Joseph like you have never seen it before.

Please explore the pages on this blog.   There are pages for auditions, parents, childrens chorus, calendar and more to come.   You will find some information now and this is where the latest information will always be posted. Join as a follower to get update notifications and post your comments of excitement.    Please share this site with others and help us spread the word.

I would like to introduce our staff to you.   Each of us have shared a bit of our vision of the show.   We hope you will catch our DREAM and come play with us.

JOSEPH PRODUCTION STAFF
Melanie Day  Director/Choreographer
I wish I could convey in words how EXCITED I am about this show.   I am a Joseph veteran (7 different productions), but this time we will tell the story the way I have always wanted to tell it.
The theme of this production is DREAMS!!!!
Just as it it said in the show....Any Dream will Do.  I believe we all have
dreams inside of us and we must take action to make those dreams a reality.  We can't control the actions of others.....but we can control one thing---OUR OWN ACTIONS!!!! This show is going to be a blast!!!!   Check your egos at the door, come ready to work hard and give your all.   Don't worry about what you can't do, get excited and prepared for what you will learn to do.  We will push you beyond belief.  Just trust and and jump aboard.  This is a trip worth taking.   Encourage everyone you know to come and join us!!!  Dreams can become realities.

Tami VanDusen Vocal Coach
Joseph and the Technicolor Dream coat IS all about color. . . visually and vocally.  In my mind, voices have many hues of color and this year we want everyone to add their own color and bring it out in the distinctiveness of the human voice.  Every instrument is unique and the voice is no exception. When we cast the show this year, we will be looking for voices that have their own individual sound.  In order for this show to be the best, we need students that are willing to work hard and produce a voice that maybe they didn't have when auditions began.  Hard work  and a positive attitude is a key element to success!  If you're willing to let us "train" you, then we want you!  We showed the community last year that dreams CAN happen.  Let's show them this year that dreams DO continue to happen.

Braden Howard Technical Designer

My concept for the lighting for 'Joseph' is "We dream in color!"  As you may expect, Joseph will be full of color, in order to complement the stories being told on stage.  We will be hosting a fund-raising concert on the 9th of September to help replace some of the 60-year-old lighting equipment and update it with newer, more colorful units that will help to both dazzle the audience as well as educate the crew members involved.

Melody Wade Assistant Choreographer

“Joseph” is a show that I have “dreamed” of being involved with forever!  Its music is so versatile and full of energy.  The choreography that we have planned will make the audience wish they were on the stage dancing with us!  THAT is the goal!  Come join us!

 Michelle Jackman Assistant Choreographer

I LOVE this musical and have fond memories of it from southern Utah where I was able to help train some of the dancers for the Tuacahn's production of Joseph!  Because of the diversity for this show, I would love to work with very strong technical dancers who feel very comfortable dance in pointe shoes (like their second skin!).  I had so much fun working with the dancers in Phantom and am thrilled that I have been asked to assist with the musical production again this year.  Let's not just dance the dance - but BE the dance!
